Lisdoonvarna is a small town located in the north of County Clare on the Atlantic seaboard of Ireland. It is Ireland's only Spa Town where tourists flocked to drink the legendary healing waters.
Matchmaking soon became one of the main activities when bachelor farmers traveled to Lisdoonvarna in search of wives. The famous Matchmaking Festival takes place every year in September in Lisdoonvarna, Ireland attractivng some 40,000 hopefuls and festival-goers making it the largest singles event in Europe.
Lisdoonvarna also became host to an open air music festival attracting the finest Irish musicians. Irish musician Christy Moore immortalized the town with his song "Lisdoonvarna". We pay tribute to Lisdoonvarna with our matchmaker bar, music room and cottage style restaurant, which contains many of the bric-a-brac and interior design elements reflective of those more than 100 years ago.
What does Lis Doon Varna mean?...it's derived from an Irish Gaelic name, 'Lios Dúin Bhearna', meaning Enclosed Fort by the Gap. It is thought to refer to the green earthen fort of Lissateeaun (fort at the fairy hill).
At the heart of our pub is the welcome that is extended to all to enjoy lively conversation, music, good food and drink.
